A German nursing home has come up with a novel idea to stop Alzheimer’s patients from wandering off: a phantom bus stop. The bus stop, in front of the Benrath Senior Centre in the western city of Düsseldorf, is an exact replica of a standard stop, with one small difference: buses never stop there. [..] It sounds funny but it helps. Their short-term memory hardly works at all, but the long-term memory is still active. They know the green and yellow bus sign and remember that waiting there means they will go home. The result is that errant patients now wait for their trip home at the bus stop, before quickly forgetting why they were there in the first place. [..]

My dream is to never have to take a real job again. If my next movie bombs and nobody ever gives me another dollar to make more, I wouldn’t care. I don’t need to do it anymore. I was never convinced that the film thing would last anyway. It just made me interesting enough to have a Web site.

Starting next July, every person in Finland will have the right to a one-megabit broadband connection, says the Ministry of Transport and Communications. Finland is the world’s first country to create laws guaranteeing broadband access

The government had already decided to make a 100 Mb broadband connection a legal right by the end of 2015. On Wednesday, the Ministry announced the new goal as an intermediary step.

“We think [the internet is] something you cannot live without in modern society,” said Laura Vikkonen, a spokesman for the ministry. “Like banking services or water or electricity, you need an internet connection. “Universal service is every citizen’s subjective right.”
